Hello everyone and welcome to Seneca College. My name is Krisha Amin and I am your Seneca Student Federation President. The Seneca Student Federation is really excited to begin 2021 with you and I am honoured to be serving you all.
As the SSF looks back onto 2020, particularly since March when COVID-19 took hold of the world, the SSF and Seneca College scrambled to continue to provide its students with the support and services they needed most, including emergency financial support. Working in collaboration with the college during the fall 2020 semester, the SSF and the college were able to provide more than 7,000 students financial support through the COVID-19 Relief Bursary.
While the past months have not been easy, I could not be more proud of Seneca’s students for their resilience during a very challenging time. Not only were you resilient, but you also thrived and I am pleased that the support and services offered by the SSF played a part in student success stories. While we all look forward to better times ahead, the SSF remains to be committed in providing the support and services each and every student deserves.
The SSF is your student government and consists of student leaders who, just like you, are full-time students and who are committed in upholding the mandate of the SSF. In the next few weeks, the SSF Board of Directors will be holding a public session meeting where students are encouraged to attend. The purpose of holding a public meeting is to provide students a better understanding of how the SSF Board of Directors conducts business as well as build a stronger and more connected relationship with the SSF. Watch for notice of this meeting.
Working closely with the college is an important initiative of the SSF to ensure student voices are being heard by representing you in the various college committees. The SSF also encourages students to familiarize themselves with Seneca’s Academic Policies, as we support and promote the values associated with these policies.
The SSF’s first and foremost priority is the safety of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we will continue to work differently, the SSF is still available to you virtually. We are committed to listening to all concerns and issues you may be facing. Behind the scenes, the SSF is working hard on various initiatives to represent your needs and requests by bringing them forward to various Seneca committees and executive teams to ensure that your voice is heard.
As a full-time student, you are eligible for SSF services, including health and dental insurance for domestic students, RealCampus support, which is extended to all students during these difficult times, student advocacy, and much more. We also recognize the importance of the meal support program during these difficult times, which is why we have enhanced the meal support program, including the virtual food-bank program. In the fall 2020 semester we helped almost 1,600 students through the virtual food-bank program. If you are a full-time student, and need support, you can apply through the virtual food bank program.
At the SSF, we understand the importance of student clubs and the impact they have on the student life experience. You can find information on how to start or join a club on the SSF website’s clubs platformNow, more than ever, it’s important for all students to have the opportunity to connect with other students, even if it’s virtually, to provide them with a feeling of community. Program-specific students are encouraged to form an academic club. The SSF, partnering with the college’s Career Development department, will be supporting academic clubs through networking opportunities, assistance in employment searches, and more.
Exciting events are also being planned for the winter semester, including Frosh Week, professional development training, networking events, and much more. Check out the SSF’s website for the latest information.
The whole SSF team is very excited to serve you, for now virtually, but we cannot wait to see you on campus once this is all over, and we wish you all the very best in 2021.
Thank you very much, stay safe and stay tuned.
Krisha Nikul Amin
